Originally used to provide hay, much of the land at the farm hadn't been plowed for crops. When George John Lowell and George James Lowell began to farm the land rather than renting it out, there were large numbers of rocks that needed to be removed, many requiring sticks of dynamite to get them out of the ground. L. to R.: Linda Lowell and Gerald Lowell.

Jerry Lowell sits on a large rock while his father, G. James Lowell, plows a field. Over 100 sticks of dynamite were lit during the first year of farming in order to remove large rocks imbedded in the fields. This rock is still in the process of being dynamited into smaller pieces so that they can then be removed to the stone pile.
