“The widow of Paul Olsen, Berit Hansdtr, stayed with the leasehold Haugen three and a half years after her daughter Kirsten Paulsdtr married Ole Nilssen from Løvik. He was the brother of Tollef Nilssen in Sørjorda, who had married Kirsten’s sister. Family ties would eventually spread throughout Haugen.
“The courtyard was probably not shared even though the farm consisted of two leaseholders. The two leaseholders on Haugen were quite similar economically, at least as reflected in the tax lists. Farming appeared to be done in common during the rest of the 1700s, a familiar behavior for houses that were shared between close relatives.
“The marriage of Kirsten and Ole was short. Kirsten died in 1787, perhaps during a pregnancy. A change occurred that same year that yielded a nice profit. The values of the farm were valued at twice the debt, but it was still far below what the previous generation had.
“Ola then married in 1788 Kirstin Maria Pedersdtr from Nøss. At that time, there was a good fishing boom that lasted until the 1790s. Then came the bad years starting with 1800, with damp and cold weather and with lousy fishing. Ole and Kirstine had perhaps not planned for this and their debt increased rapidly. Times of crisis and epidemics go together.
“Kirstin was among the many who died in spring of 1804. She was 42 years old. They were bankrupt and their debt had grown considerably since 1800. None of the six children were confirmed, and Ole had to have a new wife in the house. The hopeless living conditions made having a wife even more necessary.
“The year after Kirstin died, Ole married for the third time. The bride was a widow from Gavlen, Pernilla Maria Hansdtr (they married in 1805). She was nearly twenty years younger than Ole, and still young enough to have a child. They had two boys, the last was born in January 1808, then in December of that year, Ole died at 55 years of age.
Pernilla was left alone with the young family and had no inheritance for even this shift in circumstances turned out to be a failure. She held the lease until one of her stepsons got married in 1813. Two years after this, she died.”
