    Notes
    • From “Hartford, S.D. 1881-1981 Centennial”:

JORDAN, the C. W. family came to Dakota Territory in 1882 settling first near the Trinity Lutheran Church, but taking up a homestead one year later in Section 19 Wall Lake Township. Jordan located his home and barn on an established trail to Sioux Falls. C. W. Jordan was a rock mason, learning this trade from his father, C. W. Sr., thus most of the original buildings were erected on rock foundations. The first barn was a basement barn erected on a rock wall without mortar, as was a cave and a retaining wall near the house which are still standing.

Much of the Jordan family’s income during those early years was eggs and cream, which they sold from door to door in Sioux Falls. What was left was traded for groceries on those weekly trips to the city. Six children were born to the family: Minnie (Mrs. John Grave); Anna, (Mrs. Henry Boy); Augusta (Mrs. Otto Kroeger); Charles (killed as a child in a runaway); Emma (Mrs. Jake Jorgensen) and Clarence. The latter two are still living and active.

Many events took place at the Jordan farm. Among them the renting of “the Bowery,” a portable dance floor secured for Anna’s and Augusta’s wedding receptions. Several 4th of July picnics open to the neighborhood were held on the farm. Everyone chipped in on the beverages. None of the picnics got out of hand, but the writer remembers stories handed down that certain individuals just may have stood around the keg a little too long! A Ladies Corn Picking contest was held on the Jordan Farm in 1940.

C.. W. Jordan’s father came to live with the family in the early 1900’s, so his generation, C. W.’s generation, his son Clarence, grandson Arvid, and Arvid’s children comprise the five generations to live on this place.

The family has been active in many community events, including 4-H, township and school governments. Clarence served for many years on the Farmers Elevator Board in Hartford. He and his wife, Elsa are now retired and live in Sioux Falls. Their children are Arvid, Ardeth (Mrs. Norman Rang) and Clarice (Mrs. Lowell Voigt) who reside in Sioux Falls.

Arvid, his wife Doris and daughter Lori are living on the homestead. Lee, his wife Jeri and two daughters, Cari and Jill, live three miles west of Wall Lake. Bruce, his wife Sandy and son Nicholas, live southwest of Wall Lake. Neil, his wife Dephine, and daughter Jamie and son Brian reside in Sioux Falls.

Music is the hobby of all the Jordan Family and they have performed in many area events.
