- From Argus Leader, Sioux Falls, South Dakota: 24 Jun 1944, Sat.:
“Miss Marjory Larson is leaving soon to make her home in Minneapols, Minn. As a compliment to her, Miss Alice Nelson, 1316 East Seventh st., entertained Thursday evening, inviting 15 friends in for an informal evening of visiting. Refreshments were served by the hostess assisted by her mother Mrs. H. D. Nelson. Miss Larson was remembered with a gift.”
From a letter dated 2 Sep 2006 from Betty Nelson:
“Went out to see Lil yesterday. She said your folks lived with them for awhile after they were marrried. Lil said at the time, they lived on 18th & Grange near the drug store. After they moved, the house was turned into a dry cleaners. I don’t remember that place at all. You were born there and then later they moved to West Sioux. Lil couldn’t remember going to your folk’s wedding but she said she probably did.”
Occupations--Office clerk, John Morrell & Co.; Bookkeeper, West Sioux Grocery Store; Office clerk, Pipestone County Hospital; Teachers' Aide, Grades 1-2, Pipestone School System; Retired May 1991
Part-time teachers' aide, Grade 3, Sioux Falls School System.
From the Sunday, January 14, 1979 issue of the Argus-Leader, Sioux Falls, SD, p. 10B:
By Mel Antonen “On Bowling”:
“Lowell hits 657:
Alice Lowell rolled a 265-657 in the Ladies Sportsman League at Sport Bowl, and even though she was pleased with her performance, it wasn’t the highlight of her career.
The year Lowell won the all-events title in the state bowling tournament in Brookings is the highlight of her career. That was back in 1964, the last time she has ever won anything at the state level.
Previously she won a singles title in 1954 and doubles titles in ‘57, ‘59, ‘63 and ‘64.
‘I remember that state tournament in Brookings the most,’ Lowell said. ‘I really had a good tournament that year.’
Is the competition getting tougher?
‘It’s getting tougher and better, but I am getting older and that makes it harder to win a state title,’ Lowell said with a laugh.
Alice’s 265 was the first of her series and she followed with games of 213 and 179. She had a 262 at Suburban once and a 633 series. She has been bowling for 30 years.
‘My scores just kept going backwards,’ said Lowell about her most recent success. ‘I was surprised with the game. I never expected to do that well.’
Lowell started her first game with seven strikes. A spare ended her string. After slipping some in the second game, Lowell started with two opens in the third. She thought she was in for it.
‘I said to myself here I go,’ she said. ‘I thought I was going to throw it all away. I was just hoping to come out of that third game with an average score so I could have a good series. I am satisfied with what I did.’
Lowell is originally from Sioux Falls, but she and her husband moved to Pipestone, Minn. eight years ago.
Her 265 game is second on the season’s honor roll behind Darlene Nicholson’s 279 while the 657 is among the top three in the city. Tip Barrett has a 663 and Helen Lang a 657.
Lowell averages 171.”
Started bowling in 1947. Inducted into the South Dakota Bowling Hall of Fame in 1996 for “Superior Performance.”
Trophies won for bowling:

In 1987 at the Women’s National Bowling Tournament, bowling with Millie Wyman, they tied for last place in the pay schedules and received $12.50.
Inducted into the Sioux Falls Regional USBC Hall of Fame on May 12, 2008 [posthumously]:
Statement made at the induction ceremony:
“Alice Lowell started bowling in the fall of 1947, at the downtown Sport Bowl. Alice was a member of the South Dakota Womens’ Bowling Association for 47 years. She bowled in several leagues over the years, during which time she held many office positions in those leagues.
“Alice’s family moved to Pipestone, Minnesota in 1971, and lived there for 20 years. She still belonged to the Sioux Falls Womens Bowling Association and drove to Sioux Falls every Wednesday night to bowl. This is a trip of about 100 miles and she didn’t miss many nights of bowling. Her family moved back to Sioux Falls in 1991.
“Alice was Tournament Manager of the Sport Bowl Ladies Handicap Tournament for 26 years. She also belonged to the Local 600 Club, of which she was a charter member. She also belonged to the State and National 600 Clubs., and of course bowled in those tournaments, as well as sesveral Senior Tournaments. She has bowled in ten National Tournaments. The only time she won any money was in Hartford, Connecticut, in 1987. She and her sister tied for last place with many other women and each won $12.50. A copy of that checkbook is in her scrapbook.
“Alice also had the honor of bowling in an exhibition match with Pro Bowler Marion Ladewig. She also bowled in the Big Bowl on television. She was in the finals and placed second.
“Alice has bowled in ten National Tournaments’, attended many workshops, and bowled on many teams that won first place honors as well as high games, series and average awards.
“In 1957 she won the State Singles scratch and handicap, and she and her partner won the scratch and handicap event. They repeated that in 1959, 1963, and 1964. Her team won the scratch event in 1973. She also won Singles, Doubles Team and All Events in the Sioux Falls City Tournaments.
“Alice’s career high game was a 265, with a three game series of 657 and a four game series of 768.
“She was indcted into the South Dakota Bowling Hall of Fame in 1985, and it is with pride we induct her into the Sioux Falls Regional Bowling Hall of Fame in the Superior Performance Category.”
From “Woman Bowler” January 1985:
“Spare Notes: In the November issue of The Woman Bowler, we reported that a couple of sisters may be the only sibling duo to have won the all events championship of a state tournament. But it appears that another sisterly duo can match thisis. That’s Lil Hofstad and Alice Lowell of Pipestone, Minn. Both Hofstad and Lowell won the all events titles of the South Dakota WBA Championship Tournament. Hofstad won it in 1972 and Lowell earned the title in 1964. Later they had a repeat performance in the South Dakota City Tournament all events, as Lowell won in 1981 and Hofstad followed with a title in 1984. Talk about a family tradition.”

Alice was born and raised in Sioux Falls, South Dakota, a child of Norwegian immigrants. She graduated from Washington High School in 1944. While a senior, she was president of the Girls’ Athletic Association and a cheerleader. In high school, she became an avid roller-skater and met her future husband, Jim Lowell, at the West Sioux Roller Rink. They were married in 1948. After working as an office clerk at John Morrell and Co., Alice served as a bookkeeper for the West Sioux Grocery Store. Following a brief period of time in Huron, the Lowell family spent 20 years in Pipestone, Minnesota, where Alice worked at the Pipestone County Hospital and then served as a teachers’ aide for first and second graders. Upon their retirement in 1991, Alice and Jim returned to Sioux Falls.
The loves of her life were her husband and their three children, Jerry, Linda, and Leann. She gave everything to her children: support, strong values, courage, confidence, and much laughter and joy. She was a very active parent at the Jane Adams Elementary School in West Sioux Falls, and served as president of the PTA. Her dedication to her children continued onward to her three sons-in-law, Tom, Mitchell, and Jeff, and onto the next generation as she nurtured her two grandsons, Ryan and Matt, and her granddaughter, Megan. The latest recipient of her love and devotion was her future grandaughter-to-be, Emily Lease, Ryan’s fiancee.
Alice was an accomplished bowler and won numerous state and city bowling competitions and awards. For many years, she was the secretary of an annual bowling tournament held at the Sport Bowl. In 1996, she was inducted into the South Dakota Women’s Bowling Association Hall of Fame.
She was a cherished friend to many individuals. She was an inspiring role model and was deeply loved by all those she touched. She played cards monthly for over forty years with the same group of women whom she viewed as extended family. She was also an accomplished greeting card “stamper.”
Alice enjoyed being on the go. Her children loved her frequent visits. Every moment spentwith Mom was a blessing and she continued to dote on them as she did when they were growing up. Clothes were ironed, meals prepared, and closets, stoves, and refrigerators cleaned whenever she came to town. When she returned to her home in Sioux Falls, her adult children would have to relearn how to care for themselves. Following her husband’s death, she traveled to Alaska, discovering the riches of the land, and to Norway, discovering the riches of her ancestry and extended family.
Grateful for having shared her life are her son, Gerald Lowell and his partner, Mitchell Block, San Francisco, California; daughter, Linda Geraets and her husband, Tom, Pierre, South Dakota, and their sons, Ryan and Matthew, and Ryan’s fiancee, Emily Lease; daughter, Leann Zelhart and her husband, Jeff, Kansas City, KS, and their daughter, Megan; 1 brother, Harold Nelson and his wife, Betty, Sioux Falls, South Dakota; 2 sisters, Lillian Hofstad and her husband, Wes, Sioux Falls, South Dakota; and Mildred Wyman and her husband, Hank, Selma, OR; and many nieces, nephews, grand nieces, and grand nephews.
The family of Alice Lowell thanks you for your support and presence today. An invitation is extended to join them in Fellowship Hall of First Lutheran Church for refreshments following the committal service.

| Heirlooms. Lowell, G. James and Alice Nelson Lowell. Family Bible. This Bible was selected by Alice and Jim, using "credits" from a work-related performance program at Lakeside Dairy that enabled employees to select items for their home. This Bible was always kept on the second shelf of a table in the living room. The Bible had a section containing colorful illustrations of some of the stories it contained. Alice and Jim's children liked to look at these pictures, but they always had to wash their hands before they could touch this Bible. |
