From the Oakland Tribune: July 6, 1917:
“The latest betrothal to interest society in Oakland is that of Miss Marion Hook and Edwin Lowell Garthwaite. The marriage, which will probably take place later in the year, will unite two of the oldest families in the county. Miss Hook, who is a graduate of the University of California, where her fiance also took his degree and where he is associated with the faculty of the college of agriculture, is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. W. P. Hook. She was prominent on the campus in the KaKappa Kappa Gamma sorority, the English Club and the Prytanean Society. Garthwaite, who is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Edwin Garthwaite, is a Chi Psi man and has membership in the Winged Helmet and Golden Bear societies. He is a nephew of Mrs. John A. Beckwith, who retired as president of Ebell this year, and a cousin of Lowell Redfield, the well known singer.”

From the Oakland Tribune, Monday, October 8, 1917:
“In the little Chapel of the Good Samaritan, Ninth and Oak streets, yesterday evening, at 6 o’clock, was solemnized one of the prettiest church weddings this side of the bay. The event was the marriage of Miss Marian Hook, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. W. P. Hook of Piedmont, and Edwin Lowell Garthwaite, the ceremony read by Rev. Alexander Allen of St. Paul’s Episcopal church. A pretty bit of sentiment in the wedding was that the romance of Miss Hook and her fiance has dated from their earliest school days, and it had always been their wish to be married in the Chapel of the Good Samaritan, which is a branch of St. Paul’s church.
Attending the bride was a coterie of her former classmates, the quartet of bridesmaids including Miss Margaret Garthwaite, sister of the bridegroom; Miss Katherine Bangs, Miss Leila Berry and Marjorie Waldron.
Miss Jean Scupham was the maid of honor and was gowned in a dainty frock of blue crepe de chine with an overdress of white chiffon embroidered in gold threads.
The bridesmainds were gowned in blue and gold and each carried long-stemmed chrysanthemums in gold color.
Wyman Garthwaite was best man for his brother.
The church was decorated in autumn foliage with russet and gold chrysanthemums and white asters within the chancel.
The bride was gowned in an afternoon frock of white crepe de chine designed upon the simplest lines, the skirt made ankle-length. Her veil of sheer tuile and sprays of orange blossoms completed the pretty picture.
The bride since completing her studies at the University of California has been in the office of President Benjamin Ide Wheeler of the State University. She is a member of the Kappa Kappa Gamma sorority.
Mr. Garthwaite is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Edwin H. Garthwaite and a grandson of W. W. Garthwaite, president of the Oakland Bank of Savings. He is also a graduate of California and member of the Chi Phi fraternity and of the Golden Bear and Winged Helmet societies.
Mr. and Mrs. Garthwaite have gone on a short honeymoon trip and upon their return to the bay section will reside in Piedmont.”
